When someone searches for a service “near me” or adds a city name to their search, Google shows a map with a short list of local businesses at the top of the results. Getting into that list can bring a steady flow of calls and visits, often without spending a cent on ads.

This checklist covers the steps that matter most for local search. Work through them in order and you will be ahead of many of your competitors.

Why local SEO matters

Local searches usually come from people who are ready to act. Someone searching for a web designer, a dentist or a roofer in their town is often comparing options right now. Showing up in those results puts you in front of customers at exactly the right moment.

Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the local results. It is free, and it is the single most important part of local SEO.

Choose the right categories

Your primary category tells Google what your business is. Choose the most specific option that fits, then add secondary categories for other services you offer.

Fill in every detail

  • Business name exactly as it appears on your signage
  • Address or service area
  • Phone number and website
  • Opening hours, including holiday hours
  • Services or products with short descriptions
  • A clear description of what you do and where

Add photos and keep it active

Upload photos of your work, your team and your premises. Profiles with photos tend to look more trustworthy. Post updates, offers or recent projects regularly so your profile looks active.

Tip: answer the questions in the Q&A section yourself, and add common ones you hear from customers. It saves people a call and shows you are responsive.

Keep your business details consistent

Google compares your name, address and phone number (often called NAP) across the web. If your details are different on your website, Facebook page and directory listings, it can reduce Google’s confidence in your business.

Make a list of every place your business appears online and update them so they match exactly, down to abbreviations like “St” versus “Street”.

Build pages for your services and locations

One page that lists every service is hard to rank. Give each main service its own page, with helpful detail and a clear call to action. If you serve several towns, create genuinely useful location pages rather than copies with the town name swapped.

Collect and reply to reviews

Reviews influence both rankings and the decisions customers make. Ask happy customers for a review straight after a job, and make it easy by sending a direct link.

  • Reply to every review, positive or negative
  • Thank people by name and mention the service
  • Respond to complaints calmly and offer to fix the issue
  • Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them

Links and mentions from other local websites tell Google that your business is part of the community. Good sources include local business associations, chambers of commerce, suppliers, sponsors and reputable industry directories.

Make your website fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on phones. Make sure your site loads quickly, your phone number is a tap-to-call link and your address and service area are easy to find on every page.

Track your results

Set up Google Search Console and Google Analytics on your website, and check the performance section of your Business Profile. Watch for growth in calls, direction requests, website visits and the searches people use to find you.
